Planning a river cruise this spring? Staying informed on the latest European river water levels is essential for a seamless luxury journey. Today’s official data shows a dynamic shift: much-needed rain is providing relief to the Rhine, while the Danube in Hungary continues to challenge skippers.

River Segment

Status

Current Navigation Condition

Upper Danube

🟢

Green. Levels through Bavaria and the Wachau Valley remain stable. Bridge clearances are optimal for all standard luxury vessel classes.

Lower Danube

🔴

Red. Low Water Alert. Budapest gauges are currently holding at approx. 94 cm. While a slight rise is forecast for later this week, critical draft restrictions remain in effect for the Hungarian sector.

Rhine River

🟡

Yellow. Improving. Recent rainfall has begun to lift levels at the Kaub chokepoint (approx. 125 cm). While draft restrictions are easing, vessels are still generally sailing part-loaded (60-70%).

Maine River

🟢

Green. Water levels are well-regulated by locks. Transit through the Maine-Danube Canal is proceeding on schedule with no reported delays.

Moselle River

🟢

Green. Stable spring flows continue. Navigation is completely unrestricted for all commercial and passenger traffic.

Seine River

🟡

Yellow. High Water Watch. Levels in Paris remain elevated. While the river is open, some city-center quays are restricted; alternative docking protocols are active.

Rhône River

🟢

Green. Normal service continues between Lyon and Arles. The river is at optimal spring levels with no navigational alerts.

Saône River

🟢

Green. Ideal sailing conditions throughout Burgundy with no speed restrictions or lock delays.

The Danube: Critical Lows in Budapest. The Lower Danube remains our primary area of concern this morning. River cruise water levels in Budapest are currently holding at a critical 94 cm. While we are beginning to see the first signs of a rising trend in the 5-day forecast, the current "Red" alert means significant draft restrictions are in place. The Upper Danube remains 🟢 Green and stable, but travellers heading south toward Hungary should stay in close contact with their providers for potential itinerary adjustments.

The Rhine: A Positive Shift at Kaub. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for the Rhine River. After a week of shallow water that forced many ships to sail half-full, recent rainfall is finally draining into the river. The chokepoint at Kaub is currently rising toward the 125 cm mark. While sailings are not yet at 100% load capacity, the "Yellow" status is trending toward a "Green" recovery by mid-week.

France: High Water Watch in Paris. In France, we continue to monitor the Seine River under a 🟡 Yellow status. Elevated spring levels in Paris mean that bridge clearances are being monitored closely and some alternative city-center docking is active. Conversely, the Rhône and Saône remain in perfect 🟢 Green form, offering a smooth and scenic journey through the heart of Provence.

Weather Forecast: The Spring Rain Relief. The mid-May forecast shows a break from the dry high-pressure system that dominated early May. Unsettled weather with daytime showers is expected across Central Europe this week. This is exactly what the Danube and Rhine basins need to stabilize and raise the currently low water levels.
