What River Should I Sail on For My First River Cruise?
Planning your very first river cruise is incredibly exciting, but it often brings up one major question: "With so many waterways in Europe, where should I actually start?" When I work with clients who are new to river cruising, there are two iconic rivers that always top the list. Both offer high-impact sightseeing, smooth sailing, and an incredible introduction to life on the river. Let’s break down your two best options for a first-time voyage.
Option 1: The Upper Danube River
If your travel dream involves grand imperial cities, classical music, and sweeping vineyard views, the Upper Danube is a spectacular choice.
The Route: This itinerary typically sails between Vilshofen or Regensburg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary.
The Countries: You will pass through four countries on this sailing: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.
The Highlights: You’ll visit world-famous capital cities like Vienna and Budapest. Plus, you’ll get the chance to sail through the Wachau Valley in Austria—a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with rolling hills, historic castles, and endless vineyards that are absolutely spectacular to view from the ship.
Option 2: The Rhine River
If you love fairytale landscapes, local beers, and dynamic cityscapes, the Rhine River is an absolute must.
The Route: This popular sailing runs between Amsterdam, Netherlands and Basel, Switzerland (and can be done in either direction).
The Countries: You’ll cruise right through the heart of Western Europe, visiting the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland.
The Highlights: This itinerary features incredible stops in historic cities like Strasbourg and Heidelberg. You’ll also sail through the breathtaking Rhine Gorge, which boasts the highest concentration of historic castles along its banks of any river stretch in Europe.
👑 The Queen's Tip: I personally love the Rhine because it has the most epic beginning and ending to a trip. Ending your cruise in Switzerland is unforgettable, and I highly recommend extending your vacation by a few days to explore the Swiss Alps!
Which One Should You Choose?
Both the Danube and the Rhine offer a gold-standard river cruise experience, packed with inclusions, stunning scenery, and seamless travel. If you prefer grand architecture and musical history, choose the Danube. If you prefer fairytale castles and medieval towns, choose the Rhine.
