Europe River Levels Report: Rhine Recovers as Danube Trend Turns Positive [May 14, 2026]

For those currently on a river cruise or preparing to embark, understanding European river water levels is essential for a smooth journey. Today’s data brings a wave of optimism as recent spring rains have finally reached the major catchment areas of Germany and Hungary.

River Segment

Status

Current Navigation Condition

Upper Danube

🟢

Green. Levels through Bavaria and the Wachau Valley remain stable. Bridge clearances are optimal for all standard vessel classes.

Lower Danube

🟡

Yellow (Rising). Conditions in Budapest are improving after critical lows. Gauges have risen to 109 cm, and a steady upward trend is forecast. Draft restrictions are slowly easing.

Rhine River

🟢

Green. A significant recovery is underway. The Kaub chokepoint has risen to 135 cm thanks to recent rainfall, allowing ships to return to near-full load capacity.

Maine River

🟢

Green. Stable spring conditions. All locks and canal segments are reported as fully operational for transit through the Maine-Danube Canal.

Moselle River

🟢

Green. Optimal spring flows continue. Navigation remains unrestricted for all commercial and passenger traffic.

Seine River

🟡

Yellow. High Water Alert. Levels in Paris remain approximately 3–4m above normal. While navigation is open, bridge clearances are tight and alternative docking remains active.

Rhône River

🟢

Green. Navigation is fully operational between Lyon and Arles with no reported alerts or speed restrictions.

Saône River

🟢

Green. Normal service has resumed throughout the Burgundy region with ideal spring sailing conditions.

The Rhine: A Strong Green Recovery. The Rhine River has officially moved back to a 🟢 Green status. After a challenging week of shallow water, the critical gauge at Kaub is reporting 135 cm and rising. This allows the luxury fleets of Viking River Cruises and AmaWaterways to return to standard operations through the scenic Rhine Gorge. Ships are once again able to carry 80–90% of their load capacity, ensuring that port arrivals and departures remain on schedule.

The Danube: Rising from the Lows. The news on the Danube is also turning a corner. While we are maintaining a 🟡 Yellow status for the Lower Danube, the Budapest gauge has climbed to 109 cm, up from the critical "Red" levels of 90 cm seen earlier this week. Projections from Hydroinfo Hungary suggest a steady rise through the weekend, which is a welcome relief for

Avalon Waterways and Scenic River Cruises passengers heading toward the Black Sea.

France: Paris High Water Monitoring In France, the Seine River continues to experience high-water conditions in Paris. While Emerald River Cruises and other lines are navigating safely, the 🟡 Yellow status reflects restricted access to lower quays and narrow bridge clearances. Conversely, the Rhône and Saône remain in perfect form, offering a seamless journey through Provence.

Weather Forecast: More Rain on the Horizon. The mid-May weather setup remains dynamic. A series of moisture-rich Atlantic systems is forecast to move across Western and Central Europe over the next 48 hours. This additional rainfall is the perfect "medicine" for the Danube, likely pushing Budapest levels into the 🟢 Green zone by early next week.
